Direct answer

A sole trader may need MTD for Income Tax if they are in Self Assessment, have self-employment income and their qualifying income is over the relevant threshold. Check the tax year HMRC uses, prepare digital records before the start date and build reminders for 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May where MTD applies.

Key facts

  • MTD Income Tax thresholds are based on qualifying income from self-employment and property, not taxable profit after expenses.
  • Sole traders with more than one business may need separate digital records and quarterly updates for each business.
  • Quarterly update deadlines are 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May where MTD applies.

Who this plan applies to

Use this plan if you trade as a sole trader, are registered for Self Assessment and need to check whether your self-employment income puts you into MTD for Income Tax. The official threshold is based on qualifying income, not profit after expenses.

The current phase-in uses qualifying income over GBP 50,000 in the 2024 to 2025 tax year for an April 2026 start, over GBP 30,000 in the 2025 to 2026 tax year for an April 2027 start, and over GBP 20,000 in the 2026 to 2027 tax year for an April 2028 start.

Records to prepare before the first update

Before the first update date matters, decide how you will capture sales, takings, fees, expenses, invoices, receipts and bank evidence in software that supports MTD for Income Tax. Keeping a tidy spreadsheet may still require a compatible digital link or bridging process.

If you run more than one sole-trader business, HMRC says you will need separate digital records and separate quarterly updates for each source of self-employment income. That makes early structure more important than a last-minute software choice.

Quarterly update rhythm

For standard update periods, the dates are 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. Calendar update periods use the same deadlines but align the period ends to month-end dates, which may suit businesses that already run month-end bookkeeping.

A quarterly update is a summary from digital records rather than a full tax return. It still needs clean records, because incorrect or missing transactions can affect the figures you review before sending the update.

Business Sorted next steps

Use the free MTD checker to confirm the likely timing, then set preparation reminders before the first digital-record date. The MTD Starter Pack is the better fit when you need a checklist and quarterly routine rather than a full setup workflow.

Business Sorted is not HMRC or an accountant. Treat this page as an organisation guide, then check official guidance and ask a qualified adviser if your income, accounting period or exemption position is uncertain.

Frequently asked questions

Does every sole trader need MTD for Income Tax?

No. MTD for Income Tax depends on Self Assessment status, income source and qualifying income being over the relevant threshold for the tax year HMRC reviews.

Is a quarterly update the same as my Self Assessment tax return?

No. HMRC describes quarterly updates as summaries from digital records. You still need to finalise your tax position through the required year-end process.
